Gravity: The Physical Manifestation of God’s Love

What does it mean to love unconditionally? What does a pure, selfless love look like?

The Baha’i Writings describe the physical manifestation of love as gravity.  In other words, the force that unites all things in the universe is, in fact, God’s love.

Makes sense.

What greater Power could exist than one that binds all the atoms in existence in our endless universe?  In other words, the proof of God’s existence is - at once- completely  imperceptible , yet totally all-encompassing. Like fish that swim in water yet don’t recognize the water, we exist in gravity yet don’t perceive it at all.

So where does the love between human beings fit into the paradigm of gravity?

Here’s my favorite quote about the effect of our love for each other:

“If you desire with all your heart, friendship with every race on earth, your thought, spiritual and positive, will spread; it will become the desire of others, growing stronger and stronger, until it reaches the minds of all men.”

So, just as gravity is a pulling force that exists between every object in the universe- one that always attracts and never repels- the love between human beings is the same- spreading throughout the universe, affecting every being in existence.

So no need to ask whether or not a good deed makes any difference in this world of conflict and war.

It does.

Just like your body exerts its own gravitational pull on mine- and that of every other human being on earth- your pure action does the same.

So tug away: send out rays of light and love- they will reach every human heart…imperceptibly, yes, without conscious effect, yes, but exerting a vital influence on the existence of every living being.
